The people who really make a difference in the life of a community aren’t always its well-known leaders, its philanthropists or its service organization directors. Some people just help others, and they are rarely acknowleged or rewarded. It’s enough for them to know they’re doing the right thing. The Chuck Dempewolf Community Service Scholarship honors a Thomas County resident who did just that. A “regular guy,” Chuck was committed to his family, he served his church and volunteered his time with organizations such as American Cancer Society, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Special Olympics, the school's booster club and other community improvement initiatives. Chuck grew up in Colby, went to Colby High School and Colby Community College; he worked for a local company until his death in 2005. His life was a testament to how a local individual with his or her time and concern for others can make an important, lasting contribution to their community.
2010 is the first awarding year of this $500.00 scholarship to a Thomas County high school senior planning to attend a post-secondary college or technical institute.
